How do I enroll in an online course?

  1. Look at the list of fully online courses on our web site or in our News Letter.

  2. Contact the Child Care Office to be admitted to the online courses if you are not already a student.

  3. Contact the Child Care Office for enrollment information. Enrollment into online courses is the same as traditional courses.

What type of person is best suited for an online course?
An online course is a natural fit if you are a independent, curious learner who can understand information by reading and if you don't need to hear all directions orally to remember them. If you need the stimulation of instant feedback from your classmates and instructor, choose online courses that offer chat sessions. If you have obligations or problems that don't allow you to travel to traditional college courses, then online courses with bulletin board discussions will be a convenience for you. But anyone can take and succeed at online courses.

Will I need to type much in an online course?
Yes, it would be a good idea to know how to type at least 20 to 30 words a minute. Try an online typing test.

Do online courses cost more than traditional courses?
No, they cost the same amount as traditional courses and carry the same credit.

Do I need to purchase a textbook for the e-Learning course?
Most of the e-Learning courses do not equire that you purchase a textbook for the course, however, there will be occasion that you will need to purchase a text book and these courses will clearly note this requirement.

Do I need to purchase any special software for the course?
No, usually there is no special software necessary to use a course, but you will need a recent version of a web browser. Firefox is the recommended browser for Moodle. See the Computer Requirements and Logon Procedures links for more information) about the learning management system requirements. Your instructor may have special software requirements for a particular course.

Do I need to have a computer for the course?
You need to have access to a computer to participate in the course that has a dependable Internet Service Provider. Cable and DSL connections are best for accessing Moodle. A 56K modem will work as well, but it will take a longer wait for Moodle pages to load.

Will I need to come to campus for any class meetings?
Some courses do require that you attend some on-campus class meetings. You can check the Oakland County Child Care Council (4Cs) course schedule of Classes or ask your instructor to see if your course has any on-campus requirements.

Is this course easier than the same course delivered in the traditional face-to-face format?
No, e-learning faculty have ensured that the same learning objectives found in the traditional format are found in the e-learning format. The only difference is the way the course is delivered.

What is Moodle?
Moodle stands for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment. It is an online course management system or software, that is used at Oakland 4Cs to offer web-enhanced and completely online courses. You access Moodle with a brower like Firefox on any computer that is connected to the Internet. Log in with your Oakland 4Cs account information that will be provided via email. There are student orientations if you need help in log in procedures or navigation.

How do I get to my Moodle class on the Web?
You should ask your instructor for instructions, but generally speaking you should visit http://www.oaklandchildcare.org/elearning  and then click on LOG ON.

At the 'Enter Network Password' screen:
User Name field: enter User name provided
Password field: enter your Password
